401(k) Rollover Questions to Ask Before Moving Your Money

By Chandler Worth · CVA · October 14, 2026

A job change or retirement can leave an old 401(k) waiting for a decision. Before moving it, compare the choices and gather the information needed for a useful conversation with a financial professional.

Compare all four options

Depending on plan rules, you may be able to leave money in the former employer’s plan, transfer it to a new employer’s plan that accepts rollovers, move eligible funds to an IRA, or take a distribution. Cashing out can create income taxes and possible early-distribution taxes. An IRA rollover is one option, not an automatic improvement.

Ask for a side-by-side comparison

Compare total costs, investment choices, available services, withdrawal rules and creditor protections. Ask whether keeping the current plan offers advantages. If an advisor recommends a rollover, ask how the advisor will be paid and what changes for you. A convenient single account is not the only factor that matters.

Understand how the money moves

The IRS distinguishes a direct rollover from a payment made to you. A direct rollover of eligible plan funds avoids mandatory withholding; an eligible distribution paid to you generally has 20% withheld and normally must be rolled over within 60 days. Making up the withheld amount may require other funds. Some distributions, including required minimum distributions, cannot be rolled over. A conversion of pre-tax money to a Roth account can create taxable income.

Prepare for a local planning conversation

Bring a recent statement, plan fee information, any distribution notice and questions about your retirement timeline. Virginia Asset Group, based in Virginia Beach, describes financial planning and wealth-management services for individuals, families and business owners. Ask the firm which professional can review your situation, the scope of that review and its fees.
