Choosing Reading Support for a Child With Dyslexia: Five Questions to Ask

When reading is difficult, choosing support can feel overwhelming. A useful first conversation starts with the child’s needs and the instructor’s plan. The name of a program alone cannot answer every question a family has.

The International Dyslexia Association describes structured literacy as explicit, systematic instruction that builds skills in a planned sequence and responds to the learner’s progress. For parents, that provides a starting point for a more specific discussion.

What will you work on first?

Ask the provider to explain the starting point in everyday language. Which reading or spelling skills need attention? What information supports that decision? A family should leave understanding the initial goals, not just the name of a service.

Who will teach my child?

Ask about the assigned instructor’s preparation and experience supporting students with dyslexia. Discuss how the instructor adapts lessons when a child needs more explanation or practice.

What does a lesson look like?

Request an explanation of how skills are taught, practiced and reviewed. Ask how the instructor connects reading and spelling and checks that a child can use a skill beyond one exercise.

How will we discuss progress?

Agree on when you will receive updates and what those updates will show. Ask for examples of the information used to decide whether to continue a plan or adjust it. A clear communication routine helps parents ask informed questions.

How will this fit our family?

Discuss session availability, fees, travel, home practice and communication with school staff. Be honest about your family’s schedule. Ask for a manageable plan rather than assuming that every evening must become another tutoring session.
