Vernon Tillage Leads Portsmouth’s Council Vote with Opportunity and Family Needs in Focus

Vernon Tillage

Vernon Tillage led Portsmouth’s council field after the November 3 election, placing him among the apparent winners of three seats. His public-service experience connects schools, local government and the everyday needs of families.

A Portsmouth education and a wider public-service career

A Churchland High School and Old Dominion University graduate, Tillage has served on both the Portsmouth School Board and City Council. His career has included work as a chief of staff in the Virginia General Assembly, regional outreach in the U.S. Senate and community affairs in the private sector.

He has also been involved with Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Court. Those experiences help connect the work of public institutions with young people, families and the organizations supporting them.

Keeping opportunity within reach

Tillage has linked public safety with prevention, housing stability and employment. His housing priorities include a wider range of choices, support for renters and pathways for first-time buyers; his broader agenda also includes small businesses, career preparation and public education.

These subjects meet in daily life. A job opportunity is easier to use when a household can find suitable housing, and education has greater value when it connects to a practical next step. His leading result keeps those concerns prominent as Portsmouth looks toward its next council term.
