October brings football into the middle of the school calendar and the heart of college conference play. In Coastal Virginia, that can mean a Friday night supporting a neighborhood school, a Norfolk State homecoming afternoon or an ODU game under the lights. Pick the experience first, then build the outing around the actual venue and kickoff.

This is an October 2026 planning guide, checked September 30. The schedules linked here are the place for changes and later results. College fixtures below are separate from school schedules; a familiar team name does not mean a game is being played locally.

ODU: A Thursday night and a Halloween home date

Old Dominion’s schedule lists Georgia Southern at S.B. Ballard Stadium on Thursday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m. A Thursday kickoff gives the outing a different rhythm from a Saturday: plan around work, school and the trip into Norfolk before making dinner reservations.

The Monarchs also host Marshall on Saturday, October 31, listed as Homecoming and Monarch Masquerade. Kickoff remained TBA when checked. Keep the date available without inventing an afternoon or evening start. ODU travels to Georgia State October 3 and App State October 10, so those earlier games are not home-stadium options. Norfolk State: Homecoming on October 10

Norfolk State hosts Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday, October 10, at 2 p.m. in William “Dick” Price Stadium. The university lists the game as Homecoming. For a family group or friends returning to campus, choose a meeting point and review the university’s current ticket and parking guidance together.

Looking farther ahead, the Spartans list home games against North Carolina Central on November 7 and Howard on November 21, both at noon. Recheck the official schedule before committing to either later date. Norfolk State’s 2026 football schedule.

Follow a school, not an old screenshot

School football is best followed through the team’s own current calendar. Choose the school and team level, then confirm the opponent, date, stadium and ticket route. A varsity listing may differ from junior varsity, and schools can share a stadium. Navigating to the school’s main office is not a substitute for checking the game location.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools and Norfolk Public Schools’ schedule page provide official starting points. For Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton and Newport News, use the school resources in CVA’s High School Sports guide to reach the relevant division and school.

The Virginia High School League football page adds statewide season and postseason information. Use the current published bracket or announcement for playoff questions. A preseason prediction, a social-media graphic and an official postseason assignment are three different things.

Make the game the center of the evening

A local game can be the reason to explore a part of the region you usually drive through. Choose a meal close enough to the stadium that the trip still feels relaxed, and leave time for parking and entry. If several households are attending, send one message with the official schedule link, exact venue and meeting point.

Before buying, check whether tickets are assigned seats or general admission and whether every member of your group needs one. Read the host’s bag, student-entry and parking rules. A previous visit to another school or college does not establish the rules for this event.

For families thinking about participation

A game is also a useful chance to see whether a child likes the sport’s pace and team atmosphere. Keep that conversation separate from enrolling. School teams, recreation programs and private clinics have different operators and requirements. Ask the relevant athletic office or program about the next appropriate entry point, paperwork and equipment.

Support the students on the field without turning incomplete information into a story about an individual. For scores and achievements, look for a dated school or league report. Recruiting, injury and eligibility claims need more than a sideline conversation.

For another kind of fall game night, explore local volleyball and soccer. CVA’s Sports & Camps page connects school, youth and college resources in one place.
