Updated October 15, 2026: expired Norfolk and Suffolk festival recommendations have been removed. Confirm all remaining dated activities with the organizer before visiting.

A fall weekend does not need a full itinerary to feel special. One outing, a meal and enough time to linger can be more satisfying than a day spent crossing the region between reservations. October 2026 brings festival dates across Coastal Virginia, alongside museums, trails and waterfront places worth returning to.

These seven ideas give each city a turn. The suggested pairings are flexible plans, not packages or guided tours. Pick the city that fits your weekend, check the main activity’s official details and leave the second stop optional.

Virginia Beach: A daytime Halloween outing

Ghoula Palooza at Great Neck Recreation Center on October 17 offers a compact, free starting point from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Games, music and seasonal activities suit a daytime plan. Finish with lunch and let the rest of the afternoon stay open. Check the city’s event details.

On another weekend, substitute a suitable walk at First Landing State Park or time at the Virginia Aquarium. Choose the location closest to your main plan. A trip to the resort area and a trip to Great Neck are not interchangeable stops when meals, naps or another commitment set your timetable.

Norfolk: Art, maritime history or the waterfront

Start with the Norfolk city guide and upcoming Norfolk events. Choose one main activity, check the venue’s hours and admission, and keep a nearby meal or walk optional.

Our seven-city day plans connect Norfolk’s museum and neighborhood options. Pick one substantial indoor visit if rain would make an outdoor plan frustrating.

Chesapeake: Pumpkins and time on the farm

Hickory Ridge Farm’s fall season continues through November 1, 2026. Choose the farm activities your group wants, then decide whether pumpkin shopping and a snack will complete the day. Check which activities run on your date and which cost extra. Plan a farm visit.

For a quieter alternative, the Chesapeake Arboretum offers wooded paths and small bridges. Use a trail map to select a manageable route. Looking for leaves, bark patterns and different shapes can give a walk a purpose without turning it into a race or promising a particular stage of fall color.

Portsmouth: A museum day or a costume afternoon

Olde Towne works well when you want one area to explore at an unhurried pace. Start with the Children’s Museum of Virginia, then build lunch around the visit. Let the museum be the main activity; a short walk afterward can be enough.

On October 24, Trunk or Treat at Portsmouth Pavilion offers another option, from 3–7 p.m., for children 12 and younger with an adult. Treat it as its own outing if a full museum day would leave everyone tired before the costumes come out. Check the event listing.

Suffolk: A downtown stop or an outdoor afternoon

Find a current outing in upcoming Suffolk events, then check its date, location and admission before making plans.

Choose a downtown history stop or an outdoor visit from our Suffolk guide. Keep longer trail plans separate from a busy day so the drive home does not become the only quiet time.

Hampton: A farm festival or a history walk

Bluebird Gap Farm Fall Festival is scheduled for October 17–18. Hayrides, storytelling and seasonal entertainment give families several ways to spend time together. Build the day around the farm and check current parking and event information before leaving. Festival details.

On a non-festival day, Fort Monroe offers a change of pace. Start with visitor information and choose a short history-focused visit or a waterfront walk. It is a place to ask questions and pay attention, not simply another photo stop between activities.

Newport News: Nature with a Halloween twist

Night of the Living Museum runs October 23–24, from 5:30–8:30 p.m., at Virginia Living Museum. Its non-scary program mixes animals, science and treats. Reserve the evening for the event, with a meal before arrival rather than an ambitious second attraction. Check museum tickets and details.

For a daytime alternative, combine maritime exhibits with a suitable walk at The Mariners’ Museum and Park. The full Noland Trail is a substantial outing; use the map to choose the distance your family wants instead of automatically committing to a complete loop.

Make the plan fit the people

Ask everyone to name one priority. Then account for admission, parking, food and extras before booking. Keep an indoor backup for an outdoor day, confirm any access needs directly and leave time for getting from the car to the entrance.

Afterward, save the place you wanted more time for. That becomes the start of another weekend. For more choices, browse Halloween and fall events, fall outdoor outings and CVA’s existing family resources by city.
