Mamie Johnson Is Apparent Ward 3 Winner, Continuing a Focus on Community Opportunity

Mamie Johnson

Mamie Johnson emerged as the apparent winner in Norfolk’s Ward 3, positioning her to continue council service that began in 2014. Education and access to community resources remain defining parts of her public work.

From Broad Creek to regional partnerships

Johnson’s background includes an education career and leadership of the Broad Creek Civic League. She founded Community Connect around resources in education, employment, health and housing and has been involved in the city’s lifelong-learning work.

Her regional responsibilities have included the transportation commission governing Hampton Roads Transit and the Hampton Roads Workforce Council. These roles connect neighborhood needs with organizations that operate across city boundaries.

Making an opportunity easier to reach

The relationship between those services is practical. A training program has more value when a resident can reach it; information about a resource is more useful when it leads to an application or an appointment. Johnson’s work brings those questions of access into the larger discussion of opportunity.

For Broad Creek and the wider ward, her civic-league background offers a familiar neighborhood connection. As another term comes into view, the continuing story is how transportation, learning and employment partnerships help residents find a workable next step in their own lives.
