Michelle Ferebee led Hampton’s council field after the November 3 election, placing her among the apparent winners of three seats. Her background connects two important parts of the city’s identity: scientific work and community opportunity.
From research to economic development
Ferebee earned a mathematics degree at William & Mary and built a NASA Langley career spanning research, education, strategy and business development. She also chaired Hampton’s Economic Development Authority before her selection for an interim council seat in 2021.
The authority’s work has included business-park land sales, small-business grants and larger development initiatives. That experience brings research institutions, employers and the local economy into the same public-service story.
Opening doors for the next generation
Ferebee has supported young people in STEM, including establishing a junior National Society of Black Engineers chapter named for Christine Darden. Her community involvement also spans education, food security and cultural organizations.
Hampton’s broader council priorities include economic growth, living with water, an educated and engaged public, and family resilience. Ferebee’s technical and business experience offers a concrete perspective on those shared goals, while her youth work keeps the opportunities created for the next generation in view.
