Understand the referral

A periodontist specializes in the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, including periodontal disease and implant placement. A referral is a chance to understand a specific concern and discuss a plan with the specialist.

Ask your general dentist which findings prompted the referral and whether relevant records can be sent ahead. At the consultation, ask the periodontist to explain the diagnosis in ordinary language and distinguish immediate needs from decisions that can be considered over time.

An implant estimate needs more than one number

Ask for a written plan identifying the clinician responsible for each stage. Clarify whether the quoted amount includes imaging, any preparatory procedures, implant placement, the connecting component, the final crown and follow-up. Do not assume every component is covered by a single advertised price.

• What alternatives are appropriate, and what are their tradeoffs?
• What assessment is needed before deciding whether an implant is suitable?
• Which appointments and recovery arrangements should I plan for?
• Who provides the final restoration and long-term maintenance?
• What changes might alter the plan or estimated cost?

Keep the care team connected

Bring your medical and dental history and the medication information requested by the office. Ask who will send the treatment summary to your regular dentist. Before leaving, make sure you understand the next appointment, whom to call with questions and the proposed follow-up routine.
