Care & everyday life in Coastal Virginia
Find the right conversation, clinician and next step.
Mental health clinicians have different credentials, approaches and areas of experience. When contacting a practice, explain the age group seeking care and the type of support you are looking for. You do not need to share your full personal history with every receptionist to ask about availability and fit.
Ask whether an introductory conversation is available. Consider how comfortable you feel asking questions and whether the clinician explains the proposed approach clearly. Therapy is distinct from physical rehabilitation; medication evaluation is another service to clarify rather than assume.
Ask about the next available appointment and how a waiting list operates. If the first clinician is not a fit, ask for alternative resources. For telehealth, discuss privacy, technology and what to do if the connection drops before the first session.
