Start with your decisions

More than an investment account

Wealth management can bring several financial conversations together: how you invest, prepare for retirement, support family, manage risk and coordinate with tax and legal professionals. The services behind the name vary by firm. Ask what is included, who provides it and how you will pay.

Retirement & income

Organize expected income, everyday spending and larger expenses. Bring current benefit estimates and account information so a professional can discuss your circumstances.

Investments & old retirement plans

Compare existing accounts before making changes. Ask about investment choices, total costs, access to money and the tradeoffs of any proposed rollover.

Local connections

Explore wealth-management firms

These Virginia Beach firms provide starting points for residents comparing services across Hampton Roads. Confirm current services, fees, account requirements and availability directly. A listing is not a recommendation that a firm or investment is suitable for you.

Make a useful comparison

Bring the same questions to every meeting

  1. Scope: What work will you deliver, and what falls outside this agreement?
  2. Costs: What will I pay in advisory charges, investment expenses and other fees?
  3. Responsibility: Who will work with me, and how are recommendations documented?
  4. Coordination: How will you work with my accountant, attorney or employer plan?
  5. Review: How often will we meet, and what life changes should prompt an update?

Keep written notes. Compare the actual proposal with the services you need, and check professional registrations and disclosures before signing.

Common questions

Wealth-management questions, explained

How is wealth management different from financial planning?

Firms use these terms differently. Financial planning may focus on a written plan and defined decisions; wealth-management services may also include ongoing investment management and coordination with other professionals. Ask for a written scope instead of relying on the label.

Do I need a certain amount of money to work with a firm?

There is no single minimum across the industry. Ask each firm about account minimums, planning-only options, ongoing fees and whether its service fits the complexity of your situation.

How do I check a financial professional?

Use Investor.gov to find registration and background information, and confirm any professional credential with its issuing organization. Review the firm’s relationship summary or other applicable disclosures. A title or registration alone does not establish suitability or guarantee results.

Should I move an old 401(k) into an IRA?

That depends on your plans and circumstances. Compare leaving assets in the existing plan, a new employer’s plan if available, an IRA and the consequences of taking a distribution. Read our rollover guide and discuss fees, rules and tax consequences before acting.

What should I bring to a first meeting?

Bring your main questions, a broad account inventory, income and expense information, benefit estimates and relevant plan documents. Use the firm’s verified secure process for sensitive records.

Can I begin with an educational seminar?

A seminar can help you organize questions. Frank Tehel’s October Effect sessions offer a local starting point; check the linked registration page for dates and availability. Group education does not replace advice based on your own circumstances.

Plan around your life in Coastal Virginia

Compare the details of staying in your home, moving nearer family or changing your work schedule. A household in Norfolk, Chesapeake or Virginia Beach may have different costs and priorities; use your own bills and plans rather than a regional average.
